Lebanese soldiers take over the Syrian ex-occupied
sites after and are rushed by cheering opposition
supporters in the Northern town of Hamat. Cheering
supporters arrived in a convoy, honking away, as they
carried Lebanese flags and repeated slogans of "Freedom,
Sovereignty, Independence".
Syrian troops in some Lebanese areas redeployed
Wednesday morning to eastern Lebanon in the first stage of
a two-phase pullout. Syria forces also pulled out from
other positions in northern Lebanon and witnesses said the
troops returned home.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Lahoud agreed on
Monday to shift Syrian troops to eastern Lebanon by March
31. A statement said the Syrian and Lebanese military would
then decide how long the Syrians stayed.
