- Story Text: The Syrian Orthodox Church will appeal to the United Nations to restore Palestinian rights. The Antioch Holy Synod of the Church decided this during their meeting in the Syrian capital on Monday (16 June).
This was their first meeting in Damascus under the chairmanship of Archbishop Ignatius Yaacoub III. During the three-day conference representatives of the Syrian and other branches of the Eastern Orthodox Church were to discuss the future of Jerusalem.
The Eastern Orthodox Church accounts for one sixth of the world's Christian population. Archbishop Ignatius, the new Syrian Patriarchate, was authorised by the participants to address an appeal to all countries through the United Nations Secretary-general, Kurt Waldheim, for the withdrawal from all Arab occupied territories and restoration of the legitimate rights of the Arab people.
SYNOPSIS: In the Syrien capital members of the Syrian Orthodox Church have been discussing the future of Jerusalem. During the Holy Synod, the delegates decided to make a call for the restoration of Palestinian rights. The church is a branch of the powerful Eastern Orthodox church which accounts for one sixth of the world's Christians. This was the first meeting in Damascus presided over by the new Patriarchate, Archbishop Ignatius Yaacoub the Third.
He was authorised by the participants to address an appeal to all countries through the United Nations. This resolution was for the withdrawal from all Arab occupied territories and the restoration of the legitimate rights of the Arab people.
