- Story Text: Mexico City's iconic Reforma Boulevard became a runway for thousands of colorfully attired members of the Mexican LGBT community as they gathered for the annual gay pride parade Saturday (June 28).
Waving gay pride flags and wearing eye-popping costumes the participants reveled in the atmosphere of the day.
Although the 2014 parade seems a far cry from the capital's first gay march in 1978 when thousands came out to demand equal rights for the first time, today's parade participants carry the same message as their predecessors.
"Only respect and to be conscious that we exist, simply that and nothing more," said participant Dariana Camargo.
Mexico City is home to the most visible gay community in the country and couples freely express affection in many parts of the city.
However, outside the capital attitudes differ sharply, with an impunity towards discrimination and reports of violence against homosexuals common, activists say.
An important aspect the parade affords those who come out to be in it is the element of fun.
"This is also a party," said Dorian Cortes another participant. "It is very fun."
Many gay activists are hopeful that recent strides in gay rights legislation in the capital represents part of a sea change in attitudes on homosexuality in much of traditionally conservative Mexico and Latin America.
Argentina became the first Latin American country to allow gay marriages and adoptions in 2010 and Brazil recognised same-sex partnerships a year later. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
