- Story Text: Two Peruvian women took advantage of recently passed gay marriage laws in Buenos Aires to tie the knot in Argentina on Valentine's Day, Monday (February 14).
Dressed in white, Sara Coello and Yovana Solis walked into a Buenos Aires courthouse hand-in-hand and walked out with their marriage certificate in hand.
In their native Peru, legislation on gay marriage appears to be a long way off. But the couple, who have been together for 16 years and live in Argentina, are happy with their reception in Buenos Aires.
"Thanks to everyone, my family, my friends. This country accepted us and doesn't judge us. I got married, you know? Thank you everyone," the 35-year-old Coello said.
"The happiness I feel right now is incredible. Thank you so much, nothing more," Solis added.
Surrounded by friends and family, the newlyweds walked out in the traditional hail of rice.
In July of last year, Argentina became the first Latin American country to allow same-sex couples the same marriage rights as heterosexual couples. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
