- Story Text: Thousands of members of Mexico City's gay community celebrated their lifestyle during gay pride day Saturday (June 26).
Many of the parade's participants dressed for the occasion wearing costumes and lots of makeup.
However, the overall theme of the parade was to be loved and accepted for who they are by their fellow countrymen and women.
"We have to ask for rights to everyone for all Mexicans," said Sabina Berman a lesbian activist. "To put an end to to the citizens in the center who have rights and we, who do not have them."
In December of 2009 the Mexico City government voted to legalize gay marriage. The federal government of President Felipe Calderon is doing what it can to make sure the Mexico City law does not become the law of the land.
"We did not ask to be born like this," said transsexual Ariadna Castillo. "What if they had been born heterosexuals? They should know all the fear and discrimination we suffer and the persecution just for being what we are."
However, the thousands of gay men and women that came out to celebrate their sexual diversity were determined to have fun while making their presence known and their point made. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
