- Story Text: Thousands of gay and lesbian Mexicans turn out in Mexico City for the 30th annual gay pride march.
Thousands of gay Mexicans poured into the streets of Mexico City on Saturday (June 28) to celebrate gay pride and demonstrate for gay rights.
Some wore outrageous costumes while others waved the rainbow-hued flag of the gay movement as they clogged the city's balloon-festooned streets.
Despite the festive atmosphere, the message the demonstrators hoped to emphasize was serious.
"We are here to ask the government and the society for a space and our freedom and respect," said one activist.
Lolkin Castaneda, the co-ordinator of the march, called on the gay community to look at their progress since the first march in 1978. However, she cautioned there was much work that still needed to be done.
"We have to take a true stand to not take on policies of simulation, but rather to speak of homosexual marriage, of legislation of fairness that embraces all the spaces and rights that involve us," she said.
