- Story Text: Anti-gay marriage demonstrators gathered outside French embassies in London, Madrid and Warsaw on Sunday (January 13) in solidarity with tens of thousands of protesters who have taken to the streets of Paris.
Demonstrators are protesting plans by the government of French President Francois Hollande's to legalise same-sex marriage.
Demonstrators waved flags and banners and chanted slogans.
France introduced civil partnerships that were open to same-sex couples last decade.
But Socialist President Hollande's pledge to extend the institution of marriage to homosexual couples has stirred protest -- although opinion polls show that the bulk of French people either back the idea or are not opposed.
Same-sex nuptials are already legal in 11 countries including Belgium, Portugal, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Norway and South Africa, as well as nine U.S. states and Washington D.C. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
