- Story Text: Several hundreds of people took to the streets of Paris on Sunday (May 26) to protest a controversial gay marriage law recently adopted by the French parliament.
President Francois Hollande honoured a campaign pledge by making France the 14th country to allow same-sex weddings.
Yet the move has stirred up a storm of opposition among social conservatives and Catholics who have hosted a series of angry and often violent protests.
On Sunday, demonstrators gathered at three different meeting points in the French capital to head towards the Inavlides monument in central Paris.
Demonstrators waved baby pink and blue flags and chanted: 'We want work not gay marriages'.
"We are here to defend marriage because we believe a child needs a father and a mother to grow up and that this is important so that they build themselves normally (sic)."
The country's biggest social reform in three decades is backed by a small majority of French, surveys show. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
