- Story Text: Supporters of Egypt's ousted president Mohamed Mursi exchanged gunfire with police forces on Thursday (August 15) after they vowed to defy a curfew in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia.
Pro-Mursi protesters were said to have staged a march near a mosque in Ismailia during curfew hours. Police had then begun dispersing them.
The government has set a nighttime curfew that it says will last at least a month, following political violence in which more than 600 people were killed.
The violence started on Wednesday (August 14) when police cleared out two protest camps in Cairo set up to denounce the military overthrow on July 3 of Egypt's first freely elected president, the Islamist leader Mohamed Mursi.
On Thursday, Egypt cancelled a decision to shorten the hours of a curfew imposed on Cairo and 13 other cities.
In the city of Areesh in North Sinai, military soldiers stopped a car said to have belonged to three Islamist militants carrying weapons.
The curfew begins at 7 p.m. local time (1700 GMT) and lasts until 6 a.m., a cabinet statement said on Thursday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
