- Story Text: Rio de Janeiro's famed Gay Gala got underway on Tuesday (February 28) at the La Scala theatre as Carnival celebrations wrapped up ahead of Ash Wednesday.
Wearing colourful costumes, thousands of scantily-dressed tourists and Brazilians kicked off the Gay Gala, the highlight of Carnival celebrations following the end of the samba schools parades through the Sambadrome.
"This Gay Gala is a very special reference to the movement towards the affirmation of truth," one participant dressed as the mythological Medusa, said.
Although all Carnival festivities end on Ash Wednesday, organizers begin the daunting task of deciding which samba school will win.
Judges are expected to choose from Rio's 14 top samba groups who paraded through the Sambadrome for 80 minutes for a crowd of some 70,000 spectators and broadcast live across the country. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
