- Story Text: Frenchman Jean Paul Beltoise won the John Player Challenge Trophy motor race at Brands Hatch on Sunday (22 Oct.) after the withdrawal of the current world formula one champion, Emerson Fittipaldi.
Fittipaldi had started favourite for the event, which was held to honour his world title triumph. But falling oil pressure forced his Lotus out towards the end of the 106 mile (170 km) race.
Beltoise mastered conditions made difficult by rain to thread his way through the pack and take the lead on the 15th lap. He drove a BRM.
Second was Carlos Pace of Brazil, and third Andrea le Adamich of Italy. Both drove Surtees.
