- Story Text: - INTRO: The more outrageous the better was the order of the day, as hundreds of homosexuals, transvestites and drag queens wearing weird and wonderful costumes or not as the case may be partied into the small hours at Rio de Janeiro's annual gay ball.
The gay ball took place at one of Rio's most select night clubs. Some party revellers were dressed in lavish sequin-and-feather costumes imitating personalities such as Brazilian film star Carmen Miranda, flamenco dancers, Batman, cowboys, and Roman toga-clad emperors. Others, didn't leave too much to the imagination. The aim of the party was to shock and provoke the spectators gathered outside as well as the revelers inside.
One party reveler dressed in pink feathers said "Here you can find marvellous, intelligent, cultivated, chic, exclusive and unique people". Another reveller on a visit to the carnival from Argentina dressed in an orange headress said "We in Argentina don't have any balls similar to this one but can least we can come here.
So that's why we come to enjoy Brazil and the democracy and the respect for gays." Another party-goer said "Here you find happiness and beauty.
There are many international personalities who attend the ball and there are beautiful costumes." One person wore a costume representing peace for the world.
This year's carnival brought some 300,000 visitors to Rio, 15 percent more than last year, and the festivities represented a turnover of one billion U.S. dollars in alcohol sales, restaurant bills and hotel bookings, according to the Brazilian Association of Travel Agents.
