- Story Text: Members of Peru's gay and lesbian community have carried
out the country's first Gay Pride Parade to demand equality.
Peru's gay and lesbian community took to the streets
of Lima on Saturday (July 6, 2002) to celebrate gay pride with a
colourful parade, the first of its kind in the South American
country.
Despite drawing a larger crowd of media and curious
passers-by, the few dozen parade participants included members
of Lima's gay and lesbian community who marched to the Francia
Plaza with signs and flags to demand justice and equality.
"We are demanding to be included in the constitution,"
participant Juan Carlos Ferrando said. "In all of the
(constitutional) reforms, the clause that included us was
crossed out."
The parade drew the attention of passers-by who heckled
the participants. Although many participants wore colourful
costumes or dressed in drag, several others covered their
faces with simple masks in an attempt to protect themselves
from reprisals.
