  • Story Text: Under the gaze of more than 300,000 people, gays and
    lesbians across Europe have put on a colourful parade on more
    than 70 boats through the canals of Amsterdam.



    Despite last minute hitches with the authorities of
    Amsterdam the fifth annual gay parade went ahead on Saturday
    (August 5) bathed in loud music, bright colours and marijuana
    smoke.

    At least 600 joined in the 70 displays that moved along
    Amsterdam's Prinsengracht canal. The procession took more than
    3 hours to cover the 5 mile (8km) round trip.

    The event, which draws tens of thousands of people from
    across Europe had appeared under threat when Amsterdam city
    authorities complained about noise levels.

    Parade coordinator, Sieb de Haan said the permissive
    atmosphere of Amsterdam had attracted large numbers not just
    of Dutch revellers, but also many foreigners.

    "It's a very tolerant city still where we like to have a
    big party," he said.
