- Story Text: Thousands of members of the Mexican gay community
took to the streets on Saturday (June 17) just two weeks ahead
of national elections.
Mexico's annual Gay Pride march took a political turn
on Saturday (July 17) just two weeks before national
elections, with two leftist parties courting voters.
"The rights that have been stepped on over the decades
have done better in the last years, but there is still plenty
to do," said Gay Activist, Alejandro Banderas.
While the country prepares for the July 2 presidential and
congressional elections, the Party of the Democratic
Revolution (PRD) and Social Democratic Party (PSD) activists
joined some 10,000 gay men and lesbians who marched down
Mexico City's main boulevard, Paseo de la Reforma, to samba
and rock 'n' roll rhythms.
PRD and PSD candidates are trailing badly in the
presidential race, but the PRD's Manuel Lopez Obrador is
leading the race for mayor of Mexico City, also up for grabs
in the elections.
