- Story Text: Bob Geldof shows his support for London's Gay Pride
event and urges commitment to the 'Make Poverty History'
campaign.
London's Gay Pride event hopes to make it's own
mark in London on Saturday (July 2) alongside the Hyde Park
Live 8 concert.
In a show of support Live 8 organiser Bob Geldof climbed
upon the Gay Pride float and thanked London's gay community
for their participation in increasing awareness on issues of global
importance and the 'Make Poverty History' campaign.
"We are so proud that this community is going to help,"
said Geldof.
"Africa is an oppressed minority. And today, between
what you people are doing and between what people in this
park are doing and the people in Johannesburg, Toronto and
Tokyo, Berlin, Paris, Rome and Philadelphia. We are going
to stop one vast oppression of a vast minority. That is
what we are going to do today and you are going to help
us," added Geldof.
The Pride parade assembled at the end of Park Lane
before moving towards Trafalgar Square.
Actor Ian McKellen who was due to address the Pride
Parade said the city of London could successfully support
two events.
"London's big enough it can contain Pride as well, and
when we are in the centre of London away from Hyde Park. We
are now going to walk know down to Trafalgar Square where
all the great rallies in the past, the rallies against
Apartheid have taken place. The rallies against injustice
take place. That is where the gay people are going to be
today," added McKellen.
