- Story Text: Turkey's Red Crescent dispatched humanitarian aid to scores of fleeing families seeking shelter on the Syrian side of the border with Turkey on Tuesday (June 14).
Children played as women rushed to cook ingredients from loaded bags brought across the border by the Red Crescent.
One Syrian refugee was grateful for the assistance the Turkish government has given them in recent days.
"I am a man, a citizen, a worker, an Arab and a Syrian from the region of Jisr al-Shughour. I have six disabled children. We fled because of tyranny and we came to Turkey for their protection -- they protect the children and Arabs. We ask the Turkish government and the leader of the country Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan to look into our situation. We fled due to injustice. Because of all this, the fear and horror we do not know anything anymore. We are running into one another. If you have a shelter, you have to share it. If you have a daughter, they attack her. If you have a home, they destroy it. We have nothing left to go to," said one man sheltering in the hills of the border village of Harabjoz.
Thousands of people have been living rough in rural areas just inside Syria, where drenching rain has led to miserable conditions.
Families in Harabjoz dried their few possessions during the day, and hung blankets on tree branches.
More than 8,500 Syrians have sought shelter across the border to escape President Bashar al-Assad's latest military drive to crush protests demanding political change in a country ruled by the Assad dynasty for the last 41 years.
Most of the refugees came from Jisr al-Shughour, 20 km (12 miles) from the border, where authorities say 120 security personnel were killed by gunmen 10 days ago. Some activists say deserting troops and residents clashed with security forces. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
