Iranian vice president Parviz Davoudi arrived in Damascus on Wednesday (March 5) on an official three-day visit as part of a high ranking political and economic delegation to the 10th Iran-Syria Joint Economic Commission session.
Launched on Tuesday (March 4), the commission is co-chaired by Iranian minister of Housing and Urban Development, Mohammad Saaedi-Kia, and the Syrian Minister of Economy and Trade, Amer Hosni Lotfi. It will discuss bilateral ties and the possibility of establishing a free trade zone between the two countries.
Upon his arrival, Davoudi met with Syrian prime minister Naji al-Otri, ahead of meetings scheduled with Syrian president Bashar al-Asad and vice president Farouq al-Sharaa on Thursday (March 6). Discussions will focus on economic cooperation and recent regional developments.
Commerical exchange between Syria and Iran is estimated at 100 million U.S. dollars annually. In 2007, Iranian investment in Syria reached 1 billion USD in a variety of fields such as energy, oil and gas. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
