- Story Text: Protesters gathered outside a Tripoli mosque on Friday (July 8) after noon prayers to denounce the Syrian regime and the crackdown on protesters in Syria.
Protests like this have taken place every Friday for the past two months with Lebanese citizens as well as Syrian nationals living in Lebanon taking part.
This Friday, protesters were mainly supporters of Lebanon's Salafist group led by Al Daeya Al Shahal who said: ''Our clear and continuing stance is that of support and defence of our brothers who are being suppressed in Syria, whose blood is being spilled.'' Another protester, a Syrian opposition activist who fled to Lebanon, said Syrians ''want to shake the dust off forty years of this regime and tell the world that we want to live in freedom.'' Tripoli is home to a Sunni Muslim majority but also has a small minority of the Alawite sect, which is the sect of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Tension between the two sects resulted in clashes recently. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
