- Story Text: Hundreds of residents of the city of Tripoli in northern Lebanon marched in a protest against the Syrian regime on Friday (July 1) in solidarity with the opposition movement there, calling for President Bashar al-Assad to step down.
Residents of Tripoli have been holding anti-Assad demonstrations every Friday for the past four weeks. Protesters chanted rhetoric against the late Hafez al-Assad, Bashar's father and president.
In the Lebanese village of Knaisseh, a number of Syrians fled on Thursday (June 30) and Friday (July 1) through an unofficial crossing into Lebanon, many of them coming from the village of Al-Qusair near Homs where a crackdown on anti-regime demonstrators is underway.
Lebanon's northern border has already seen an influx of Syrians who had escaped a military assault in the border village of Tel Kelakh last month. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
