- Story Text: German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in Syria on Monday (December 4) on a brief visit to urge the Baathist government to use its influence to help stabilise the Middle East.
Steinmeier, who is touring the Middle East ahead of Germany's assumption of the EU presidency next month, was scheduled to meet Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and senior officials before leaving Damascus later in the afternoon.
Five months ago, Steinmeier cancelled a visit to Damascus hours before his planned arrival after President Bashar al-Assad described Israel as "an enemy."
Palestinian prime minister Ismail Haniyeh also had talks with the Syrian president on Monday. Al-Assad his support for an independent Palestinian stage.
Haniyeh is also scheduled to meet other Syrian officials, Palestinian factions and Hamas leaders in his first tour of the region since his election as a Palestine prime minister. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
