- Story Text: Hamas political leader Khaled Meshaal urged Palestinians on Saturday (November 27) to make resistance to Israel's occupation a priority.
"Nothing can protect the fixed rights but resistance. Yes, the resistance is facing huge challenges, especially in the West Bank. And without changing the situation in the West Bank by carrying on with the resistance in the face of the Israeli occupation and settlement, our rights are faced with destruction and disappearance. This is a big challenge," Meshaal told a conference in Syria.
Palestinians want to establish a state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as its capital. Israel captured the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights during the 1967 war that pitted Israel against Jordan, Egypt and Syria.
U.S.-brokered efforts to resuscitate direct Israeli-Palestinian peace talks have foundered over Jewish settlement building on occupied territory, making the prospects of a swift deal look extremely remote. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
