- Story Text: Supporters of the Islamist group Hizbut Tahrir protested in Tripoli in northern Lebanon on Wednesday (August 3) to show solidarity with protesters in Syria who are demanding the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad.
Protesters marched through the streets of Tripoli carrying banners supporting Syrian cities that have been under attack by authorities and waving the black flags of Hizbut Tahrir, an Islamist group that is calling for the re-establishment of the Caliphate in Muslim regions (creation of an all powerful Islamic state).
One protester said Lebanon would remain sympathetic towards Syrian activists because of their shared heritage, making reference to the former Ottoman Empire.
"The land of Sham and us are one country and nation. Their blood is our blood and their dignity is our dignity and their cause is our cause. And Tripoli belongs to Sham and Sham is part of the Islamic world and this is why we are here and we feel their pain," said one unnamed protester.
Sham is a name that is widely used in the Arab world to refer to Syria.
Anti-Assad protests erupted in Syria in March and are still going on despite a heavy crackdown by Syrian authorities.
Hizbut Tahrir says it will continue its nightly protests through Ramadan to show solidarity with Syrian protesters who are turning out every night during the holy fasting month of Ramadan, after evening prayers. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
