- Story Text: EU Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid Louis Michel visits a medical clinic for Iraqi refugees and a Palestinian refugee camp during his visit to Syria to see how the plight of the refugees can be alleviated. EU Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid Louis Michel visited a Red Crescent medical clinic and a Palestinian refugee camp during visit to Syria on Saturday (April 28).
In Jaramana Michel visited a Red Crescent clinic where refugees from the Iraqi conflict are among those to be treated.
Michel also visited a Palestinian refugee camp at Khan Dannoun where permanent homes for refugees have been completed.
Michel said it was important for him to see the conditions of refugees at first hand so that he could identify "what are the possibilities for us to act in a diplomatic way in this complicated context."
Since 2000, the European Commission has provided more than 333 million euros in humanitarian aid for Palestinians, in addition to funds allocated under its development assistance programme.
The EU has also recently allocated 10.2 million euros of relief aid for victims of the Iraq crisis.
During his visit Michel was to visit projects implemented by the Commission's operational partners including UNRWA, UNHCR, and ICRC. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
