- Story Text: Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad visited Venezuela on Friday (June 25) on the first leg of his first official tour of Latin America.
Accompanied by his wife Asma Assad and officials, Al-Assad was greeted by Venezuelan Vice-President Elias Jaua since President Hugo Chavez is attending the ALBA Summit of leftist nations in Ecuador.
During his visit, Al-Assad is expected to review an advance of bilateral agreements Damascus signed with Caracas, according to the Venezuelan News Agency.
Chavez visited Syria in August of 2006 and September of 2009 when the two countries signed cooperation agreements in the areas of economics, agriculture, environment and sport.
Venezuela has close ties with Syria and recently announced it would build a joint refinery with Iran in Syria. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
