- Story Text: President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, who is on a three-day official visit to Syria, is taken on a tour of Damascus' historical sites with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad.
President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev was taken on a tour of Damascus' historical sites on Tuesday (November 6) by his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad.
Assad and Nazarbayev, who is on a three-day official visit to Syria, first visited the tomb of Syrian philosopher Mohammed al-Farabi, where the two leaders laid a cornerstone marking the beginning of major restoration works to be carried out on the tomb.
Assad and Nazarbayev later visited the Azzariyeh school to inspect the Kazakh-funded restoration work being carried out on the school's main building. Assad Nazarbayev also held prayers at the tomb of al-Zahar Bebars, a Mamluk Sultan who founded the school.
Nazarbayev arrived in Damascus on Monday (November 5) for a visit which aims to boost bilateral relations between the two countries.
Nazarbayev has run his ex-Soviet nation with an iron fist since 1989.
The opposition movement in the country is weak and state media never criticise the veteran leader, whose political party controls all seats in the lower house of parliament. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
