Smiling Japanese and Syrian fans gave their reactions after an incident-filled and sometimes bad-tempered match which was won by Japan 2-1 over Syria in Doha on Thursday (January 13).
Each side was awarded a penalty and each side lost a player to a red card. Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima was sent off and his punishment will affect the team in their next match.
"I am Hassan from Syria, but unfortunately we didn't win," said one Syrian fan afterwards. "I hope we win next time and we will be prepared for the second round and the Asian Cup."
A Japanese woman, dressed in kimono and with dressed hair, said: "It was sad and and also great because the first time we lost our goal keeper and finally we won the game 2-1. Thank you so much, I love you so much."
Her companion, a Qatari, was also dressed in Japanese costume, and in his case it was also a Thaub, a traditional Qatari robe.
"I am Qatari but today I am supporting Japan in the Asian Cup and I am very happy to support Japan," he said. "The only problem is when it gets to the final, Qatar versus Japan then I don't.. as you can see it is a Kimono and a Thaub that I am wearing right now, it is half and half."
Another Japanese fan was delighted with the victory. "It was really exciting because sometimes we have an unfair time like when the goal keeper went out because he got a red card. He didn't do anything actually but we got two points and I am really happy happy," he said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
