- Story Text: Hundreds gathered on the road heading to Syria's border with Jordan after Friday (August 19) prayers to a show support for the anti-Assad uprising, one day after US president Barak Obama called on the Syrian leader to step down.
The protesters included dissident Syrians, Islamist activists and youth leaders.
During the rally, the protesters called on Assad to leave office and hailed the popular protests that have swept Syria.
"The international community moved very late, after five months. Did they try to give him a chance to crush the Syrian people? But when they realized he could not crush the Syrian people, they moved. They are very late. The blame is not on them, but on the Arab leaders," one protester said.
U.S. President Barack Obama has ordered that Syrian government assets in the United States be frozen, banned U.S. citizens from operating or investing in Syria and prohibited U.S. imports of Syrian oil products.
Adding to the international pressure, U.N. investigators said Assad's forces had committed violations that may amount to crimes against humanity in a campaign which killed at least 1,900 civilians. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
