- Story Text: U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon arrives in Damascus to seek Syrian support for an international murder trail over the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon arrived in Damascus on Tuesday (April 24) seeking Syrian backing for an international court to try suspects in the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri.
Ban was greeted by Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Moualem before holding talks with President Bashar al-Assad.
In addition to the international tribunal, arms smuggling to Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon will be on Ban's agenda.
The Syrian government has said it wants nothing to do with the court, partly because it was not consulted on its establishment.
It has also objected to the idea of setting up the tribunal while a U.N. enquiry into the killing was in progress.
Damascus denies involvement in Hariri's death and says if any Syrians were involved, they will be tried at home. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
