- Story Text: Foreign media was allowed access to the central city of Hama on Thursday (August 11) organised by the Turkish Foreign Ministry and sanctioned by the Syrian government.
This comes after the Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for meetings that touched on a 10-day assault on the symbolic epicentre of protests against the president's 11-year rule.
Following the talks a Turkish envoy to Syria then travelled to Hama on Wednesday (August 10) reporting that tanks and artillery had been withdrawn from the town.
This marks the first time the city has been accessed by foreign media after a bloody military assault that has claimed the lives of at least 300 people according to human rights groups.
The foreign journalists were also scheduled to visit Deir al-Zour before returning home. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
