- Story Text: The Higher Committee of Local Elections in Syria on Thursday (December 22) commented on recently held local elections, which it said were carried out in "a democratic, transparent and honest atmosphere".
"Our people proved that it is able to overstep the difficulties and bad experiences for the benefit of its country," said Khalaf al-Azzawi, head of the Higher Committee of the Local Elections, during a news conference held in Damascus.
Azzawi said a new election law helped the process to be more transparent and it would also be useful in upcoming parliamentarian elections as well.
Local elections took place on December 12, 2011, following the new elections law issued by the Syrian government in August 2011. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
