Russia opposes the imposition of an arms embargo on Syria and believes the international community should stop threatening Damascus with ultimatums, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday (November 29).
"The suggestions - which, we sometimes hear, to impose an arms embargo on Syria - are, I would say, rather unfair. We know how an arms embargo on Libya had been enforced - in reality this embargo had been only enforced on shipments to the Libyan army, as the opposition had been getting arms and countries such as France and Qatar have publicly announced that they have been providing these arms," said Sergei Lavrov at a joint press-conference with his Iceland counterpart Ossur Skarphedinsson in Moscow.
The U.N. Human Rights Council said on Monday that Syrian military and security forces had committed crimes against humanity including murder, torture and rape, and called for an arms embargo on Syria. said Lavrov.
"Such calls to impose another (arms) embargo, this time on Syria, we will treat by taking into account the experience that we have got in Libya, and also taking into account how our partners behave. And probably the most important thing to do now, is to stop using ultimatums and to try and to shift the situation into the political field."
Russia teamed up with China last month to veto a Western-backed U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government for violence the United Nations says has killed more than 3,500 people. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
