- Story Text: Amateur video obtained by Reuters on Tuesday (January 11) showed widespread destruction in Homs's Baba Amro neighborhood, where Syrian army and security forces have cracked down on protesters for months.
The amateur video, which was filmed last week, showed damaged to buildings and shops as well as the remains of the burnt out cars. There was also an unexploded shell lying on the ground in one street in Baba Amro.
Residents in the video were saying they were unhappy with the work of the Arab League observers charged with monitoring Syria's compliance with a plan to end the 10-month old violence which the United Nations says has killed 5,000 people. The observers have been to Homs and Baba Amro a number of time since their mission on the ground began on December 26 but one resident said sometimes the observers refused to enter neighborhoods that were not safe because on incoming fire by the Syrian army positions nearby.
"I am a Baba Amro resident, I'm standing here where the Syrian army shelled, this place was visited before by the Arab observers. They didn't go to all places, they went to areas that they deemed safe for them, they didn't go to the areas where the army opening fire, and they didn't declare that the army opening fire on us,'' said one resident who declined to give his name.
An Arab League observer has left Syria, accusing the authorities of committing war crimes and turning the Arab monitoring mission sent to check its compliance with a peace plan into a "farce".
