- Story Text: Protesters gathered outside the Syrian embassy in Tripoli on Saturday (February 4) to condemn the military assault by Syrian forces on the city of Homs.
The crowd chanted slogans against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and demanded his resignation.
The protest in Libya came on the day similar demonstrations against the latest violence in Syria took place outside Syrian embassies in the Middle East, Europe and the United States.
"The reason behind our demonstration is that we could not sleep last night because of the killing of people in Homs, Damascus, Idlib and other areas. But in particular in Homs at least 200 people were killed so what do you think we should do? Should not we go to the embassy? Should not we cry, they are Syrians, our bothers," said Mohammed, one of the protesters.
Death tolls cited by activists and opposition groups said between 237 and 260 people were killed in shelling by Syrian forces in the city of Homs on Friday (February 3) night, making the attack the deadliest so far in Assad's crackdown on protests.
Russia and China joined forces in a double veto at the United Nations on Saturday to knock down a Western-Arab Security Council resolution backing an Arab League plan for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step aside. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
