- Story Text: Protesters mainly from Islamist groups held demonstrations across Lebanon on Friday (February 10) to denounce the Syrian government assault on the city of Homs that has left hundreds of people dead.
Supporters of the Islamist group Hizbut Tahrir in Tripoli in northern Lebanon carrying the group's flags and marched and chanted slogans against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his later father Hafez.
Tension was high in the city of Tripoli which has a majority Sunni community and a small Alawite community living in adjacent neighbourhoods.
The crisis in Syria is becoming increasingly sectarian pitting the Sunnis against the Alawites, the sect the Assad family follows.
Many fear that the violence in Syria could spill into Lebanon.
A protest was also held in Sidon, 40 km south of Beirut, where protesters also denounced Russia's veto of a UN Security Council Resolution on the situation in Syria. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
