- Story Text: The proposition made by the Arab League to send peacekeeping troops to Syria is "meaningless" and "unacceptable", a Syrian opposition member told Reuters on Monday (February 13, 2012).
Dr. Kadri Jamil, head of the Popular Will Party, suggested the Arab League should focus on working with the monitors instead.
"This proposition is unacceptable. It is a violation of the international law. I think that Arab League should work with the monitors and reinforcing their role. Because this is the right thing to do (working with the monitors)," said Jamil.
Jamil added that any talk of intervention in Syria would be fruitless due to Russia and China's positions.
Both Russia and China vetoed a United Nations resolution on February 4 pressing Syria's president Bashar al-Assad to step down.
"The continuous denial of the reality by the Arab League, its calls to get foreign intervention in any way is helpless. It will waste time for Syrians and increase bloodshed in Syria," said Jamil.
Syria rejected on Sunday (February 12) an Arab League resolution that included calling for a joint U.N.-Arab peacekeeping force, backed support for the opposition and reaffirmed Arab economic sanctions on Damascus, Syrian News Agency SANA reported.
A resolution approved by Arab League ministers meeting in Cairo called for "opening communication channels with the Syrian opposition and providing all forms of political and material support to it". It also urged the Syrian opposition to unite.
The resolution solidifies Assad's ostracism among his Arab neighbours and will add to diplomatic pressure on Russia and China to lift their objections and allow the world body to act. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
