- Story Text: Hundreds of protesters gathered in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Friday (February 24) to denounce the ongoing assault of the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad on the city of Homs, that has left hundreds of people dead.
Tension was high in Tripoli which has a majority Sunni community and a small Alawite community living in adjacent neighbourhoods.
Demonstrators waved flags and chanted Anti- Assad slogans.
Meanwhile dozens of Lebanese journalists held a rally in central Beirut to protest against the killing of foreign journalists in Syria.
News photographer Remi Ochlik and American correspondent Marie Colvin were among those killed in the besieged Syrian city of Homs as Assad's forces rained rockets and bombs down on opposition-led neighbourhoods.
Activists in Syria say the neighbourhood is now encircled by Syrian troops who had been sporadically firing rockets on the area.
Foreign ministers from more than 50 countries were in Tunis for the first meeting of the "Friends of Syria" group, against the backdrop of a surge in government attacks on the city of Homs and mounting world outrage over violence that has claimed thousands of lives during the uprising.
Western and Arab nations will demand on Friday that Syria allow aid to be delivered to desperate civilians in the absence of any international resolve to intervene to end a crackdown on a near year-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
