- Story Text: Twin blasts hit the heart of Damascus on Saturday (March 17), killing at least 27 people in an attack on security installations that state television blamed on
"terrorists" seeking to oust President Bashar al-Assad.
At the city's French Hospital, anxious relatives waited as wounded loved ones were treated in the intensive care department.
One woman, whose brother was seriously wounded, cried as she begged for the killing to end.
"Enough killing. My brother Samir Said is in a coma. A break in the base of his skull. May God punish them for these gifts. We do not want anything, but there's been enough killing," she said.
Another woman said she was hurt when the force of the blast hit her home.
"Because of the blast's sound, all the glass and doors were broken and I fell on the floor, because of the blast's sound," she said.
The explosions came just two days after the first anniversary of Syria's uprising, in which more than 8,000 people have been killed and about 230,000 forced to flee their homes, according to United Nations figures.
The U.N.-Arab League envoy for Syria, Kofi Annan, warned on Friday that the crisis could spill over into neighbouring countries and urged international powers to lay aside their differences and back his peace initiative.
While the West and much of the Arab world have lined up to demand that Assad steps down, his allies Russia, China and Iran have defended him and cautioned against outside interference. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
