- Story Text: The committee set to draft Syria's new constitution said the draft would be ready within days. The constitution is expected to limit the presidency just to two terms.
After a meeting held in Damascus on Sunday (January 22), the member of the committee Qadri Jamil told Reuters that the duration of the presidency will be limited.
"No, we will limit the number of the years (per term) and we assure that the presidency will be limited to two terms", Jamil said.
Another member of the committee, Omran al-Zoubi, said that two thirds of the old constitution have been changed and that the new one would guarantee general freedoms, legal rights for the citizens and political diversity.
He said: "Syria is going to be politically diverse. A system that is more democratic. General freedoms and human rights are the basis for the new constitutional texts. The judiciary, constitutional court, legal guarantees of the elections, presidential elections and parliament elections are guaranteed in this draft."
The committee was set up last October in response to the protests that kicked off in the country ten months ago. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
