  • Story Text: The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Jakob Kellenberger, arrived in Syria on a two-day visit that started with a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Mouallem on Tuesday (April 3, 2012).
    A news release issued by the ICRC on Monday said Kellenberger's talks will focus on the humanitarian situation in the areas affected by the troubles, and efforts made by ICRC and Syrian Red Crescent to respond to the needs of people there.
    Kellenberger will also meet with Syrian Interior Minister Mohamad al-Shaar and Health Minister Wael al-Halqi.
    Syria has pledged to withdraw all military units from towns by April 10 to pave the way for a ceasefire with rebels two days later, though Western envoys were skeptical on Monday (April 2) about Damascus' intent to halt its year-long assault on opponents.
