- Story Text: Syria's communist Popular Will Party welcomed on Thursday (April 12) efforts to abide by a ceasefire agreement brokered by United Nations-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.
Qadri Jamil, the party's secretary general, said it is impossible to reach a resolution without an end to violence.
"We demand an end to violence in all its forms. As long as there is violence we will not be able to reach a political resolution. Such a solution requires a certain atmosphere and this requires putting an end to the violence. This is why, we did not only welcome this solution, but we were the first to call for it," he told Reuters in Damascus.
Jamil said once both sides -- government forces and Free Syrian Army troops -- abide by the ceasefire, individuals with an extremist approach will find themselves isolated.
"The situation calls upon everyone to abide by the ceasefire, even if there are some extremists, the road is blocked in front of them because regional and international forces would not allow them to do anything."
The U.N.-backed ceasefire took effect at dawn on Thursday after the Syrian government announced on Wednesday (April 11) the army mission was over.
A source in the Syrian Ministry of Defence assured the Syrian army would retaliate to any "terrorist" acts that may take place against civilians or soldiers.
The Popular Will Party was founded after the start of the Syrian uprising, in opposition to the ruling Baath party but operating in Damascus with the permission of Syrian authorities. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
