- Story Text: Six Syrian parties on Wednesday (May 2) announced the foundation of a new coalition in Damascus with a brief to find a peaceful solution to the current conflict in Syria.
In its statement, the coalition of Peaceful Change Forces called for national dialogue to end the current crisis in Syria.
Fateh Jamous, Secretary General of the Peaceful Change Path Party read out a statement setting out the coalition's aims.
"To work in order to stop all security solutions and giving chance for political solutions as well as ensuring the army's unity and its role in civil peace and state sovereignty.... accepting any initiative that prepares the way for peaceful political solution", Jamous read.
The coalition accused the European Union of eliminating Syrian opposition inside the country by recognizing opposition groups based in Turkey as the only representative of Syrian opposition forces.
Taker al-Ahmad, representative of Syrian National Social party, said: "It (European Union) eliminated the opposition and not the regime, when it recognized Istanbul council, or the national council, as the only legitimate representative. This elimination is practised by European states, democratic states".
The Syrian government has consistently accused Turkey, which hosts the leadership of the opposition Free Syrian Army, of allowing weapons and funds to flow freely to insurgents fighting for the past 13 months for the overthrown of President Bashar al-Assad.
Most Western and Arab states have given diplomatic backing to the opposition Syrian National Council - a group led mostly by opposition figures abroad who have been negotiating with foreign powers to support the revolt in Syria. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
