- Story Text: Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby on Wednesday (May 2) held talks with members of the Syrian opposition and a representative of Russia to discuss Syrian crisis.
Elaraby met Sergei Vershinina representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry. Russia, which Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has relied upon as a shield against global censure and Western pressure to cede power, continues to put most of the blame for ceasefire violations on his opponents. Russia on Wednesday blamed "terrorists" for recent attacks in Syria and accused rebels of conducting a concerted campaign to ensure U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan fails.
Elaraby also met with leaders of the Syrian local co-ordination committee in Cairo.
After the meeting, committee president Ragaa al-Nasser said everybody agreed that Kofi Annan's peace plan should be followed.
"I think we agreed on everything. The Arab League has a real desire to support Kofi Annan's initiative and for it to be successful and we - as a Syrian association - have the same position. We see it is not permissible to bet on any alternative plan," al-Nasser said The United Nations now has 30 blue-helmeted monitors inside Syria, a nation of 23 million people, and this week accused both pro-and anti-Assad forces of violating the three-week-old truce. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
