- Story Text: The German foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, said no German national was hurt in the multiple attacks on Western embassies in the central diplomatic area and at parliament in the Afghan capital Kabul on Sunday (April 15).
The Taliban said they had launched a spring offensive and that their main targets were the German and British embassies and the headquarters of the NATO-led force.
Westerwelle said the heavy explosions, rockets and gunfire that rattled the city would not reduce their resolve and that Germany would not give in to what he described as 'terrorists'.
"We will continue to work for a peaceful and good future for Afghanistan," Westerwelle said.
"We will continue our transfer of power policy despite the setbacks because we are convinced that the agreed withdrawal must be implemented," he added Westerwelle also commented on Syria during his brief, previously unscheduled statement.
"We call upon everyone to work towards a political solution and to refrain from any form of violence. We especially call on the Assad regime to thoroughly and comprehensively stick to the ceasefire," said Westerwelle.
At their first meeting after a year of sanctions and sabre-rattling over Iran's nuclear programme, negotiators from Tehran and six world powers said "constructive" talks on Saturday (April 14) in Istanbul meant they would sit down again together next month. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
