- Story Text: Two large explosions killed at least 40 people and wounded more than 170 in Damascus on Thursday (May 10), state media said, destroying dozens of cars on a highway and damaging an intelligence complex involved in President Bashar al-Assad's crackdown on a 14-month-old uprising.
Some of the wounded were treated in a Damascus hospital.
Doctor Abid Mahmoud said emergency workers had found many torn-off limbs at the bomb site.
"The number of injured has reached 103 for the moment. The number of martyrs [dead] is 29 in addition to eight bags of torn-off limbs."
Syrian television showed mangled, burnt and smouldering vehicles, some containing incinerated human remains. Bloodied corpses and body parts could be seen on the road.
The blasts were the deadliest to hit the capital since the revolt began. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
