- Story Text: Six ceasefire monitors caught in the crossfire of Syria's conflict were handed back to their U.N. colleagues by rebels in the northern province of Idlib on Wednesday (May 16).
Video obtained by Reuters shows U.N. observers welcomed by their colleagues who spent the night in the town of Khan Sheikhoun under the protection of the Free Syrian Army.
The observers were stranded after walking into an attack on a funeral that killed at least 21 people.
The northern town has been a hotbed for anti-Assad protests and continues to witness rising levels of violence as the Syrian army engages in gunbattles with rebels seeking to oust Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.
Video obtained by Reuters shows military vehicles pushing inside Khan Sheikhoun on Wednesday amid sound of gunshots and smoke covering parts of the city.
The video also shows the scale of destruction to neighbourhoods and private property as well as Syrian rebels trying to defend parts of the town from advancing Syrian forces.
The London based organisation, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said at least 15 people had been killed since Tuesday when security forces stormed the Shammas district of Homs, parts of which Assad's forces reduced to rubble with artillery fire earlier this year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
