- Story Text: A team of U.N. observers left their hotel in the Syrian capital Damascus for Zabadani on Sunday (May 27), while other teams were in Houla, in northern Homs, investigating the deaths of more than 92 people killed in the village two days ago.
The chief of the U.N. monitoring mission, Major General Robert Mood, on Saturday (May 26) condemnded the incident that killed more than 32 children under the age of 10 and over 60 adults. He confirmed the use of artillery tank shells, without elaborating.
The Syrian government and rebels blamed each other for committing a massacre against civilians.
Still photographs taken by third parties showed the bodies of adults and children in Houla, anti-government protesters say the dead were killed by government security forces.
Syrian State Television showed pictures of what it called "massacres" committed by "armed groups".
The carnage underlined just how far Syria is from any negotiated path out of the 14-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
