- Story Text: China on Thursday (May 10) condemned a Syrian bomb blast near a convoy of UN monitors that included Chinese officials, calling for an end to the violence.
On Wednesday (May 9) a bomb exploded in Deraa close to a convoy of U.N. monitors, led by Major-General Robert Mood, tasked with observing the implementation of Annan's April 12 ceasefire deal.
The pro-government Addounia television said eight members of the security forces accompanying the monitors were wounded in the blast, but none of the U.N. observers was hurt.
"China condemns the bombing incident. We call on all parties involved in Syria to stop the violence, with the U.N. monitors, guarantee the safety of the U.N. monitors and begin the process of political dialogue as soon as possible," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei told a regular news conference in Beijing.
Sustained violence for nearly four weeks after a ceasefire deal brokered by mediator Kofi Annan, has led to warnings this week from the Red Cross, Arab League and Annan himself that the country is slipping into civil war. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
