- Story Text: A group of U.N. observers visited the Abbasid square in Damascus on Monday (June 11) where they examined the damage caused by last Friday's (June 8) shelling.
"On Friday at seven o'clock (in the evening) we were hit by two shells. At first we thought they were sound bombs but after that we were sure that they were shells. One of them hit the checkpoint and the second hit the side of the mall. Thank God only material damage was reported," said Ali Darwish, manager of the Time Mall that was targeted in the attack.
Meanwhile, Syrian TV showed footage of observers inspecting a car in the suburbs of Damascus reportedly with some 700 kilograms of explosives in its trunk.
According to Syrian TV, government forces forces foiled an attempt by 'an armed terrorist' group to blow up the car. Syria has suffered from a number of bomb attacks in recent months, bombs the government has blamed on the opposition -- a charge they deny.
U.N. efforts to bring peace in Syria have largely come to nothing, with both sides blaming the other for breaking the ceasefire. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
