- Story Text: British Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Wednesday that Russia needed to understand that siding with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was futile as the
West tries to bring the conflict in Syria to an end.
"Russia must understand that the situation in Syria is heading towards a collapse and to terrible and greater violence and a rapidly worsening humanitarian situation," Hague told a news conference.
He said that siding with al-Assad, describing the Syrian regime as "doomed and failed", and calling once more for a peaceful conclusion to the crisis.
Hague was speaking after meeting his French counterpart Laurent Fabius and ahead of a meeting of the Firends of Syria scheduled on Friday in the French capital to which Russia said they would not be represented. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
